What is FSU's issue?

It is known around the sports world that Florida State University has had its ups and downs with its athletes. They have dealt with issues such as cheating scandals, parking tickets, and many felony charges among its players.

Facing a hard time now is the offensive staff for the Seminoles football team, as they have yet again lost a major part of their redefined receiving squad as two players are suspended and possibly kicked off the team. Rod Owens, a senior at FSU, was charged with a DUI Sunday morning, nearly three hours after a spring football scrimmage.

Corey Surrency, a junior college transfer, also was suspended indefinetly due to him playing in a semipro football league before joining the school's team.

Another star of the team, Preston Parker, was released from the team after a third charge since joining the team.

Slowly, the receiving team has been diminished to freshman and inexperienced players. FSU has always dealt with issues involving their team and it seems their players are not learning from the past incidents. FSU has always been in the spotlight for their athletes' legal issues as well as Bobby Bowden's prestiged career.

As an FSU fan, I just hope that the school can finally get over all these issues they have been having off the field and finally fix the ones on the field. The players are setting a bad example for their fans and the guys that strive to be like them. Seeing the constant crime and negative image in the news can affect many players and people that are involved with the sport and the need to be great to society.

  1. My sister went to FSU, and it seemed to her, and myself that it's a big party city, and I wonder if the location of the school has anything to do with their athletes being charged, ticketed, and found essentially guilty in so many different cases.

Either way, I agree, I hope that the school gets their ideas and players where they need to be, and that no further consequences will be handed out as a result of poor judgment.

  2. It seems FSU keeps on a downward spiral to disappoinment and failure. Why can't the players and the coaches get it together?

Their coaches need to find a way to better discipline the player's unnacceptable behavior. So many look up to these athelets for guidance and direction, and their irresponsible behavior will eventually cause them their position, education, jobs and fans.

If you can't tell by my bias tone I am a gator. Thankfully, Gator fans have players like Tim Tebow to look up to an idolize. He is lucky enough to have people beside and behind him to keep him positive and motivated.

But they are not perfect either. Percy Harvin, though he was a senior, was recently charged with possesion of marijuana, Now he is a convicted felon. Oh Percy...Percy, Percy, Percy.

Everyone makes mistakes, no one is perfect. But, it's how you bounce back that counts. The coaches and players at FSU need to recognize that there is a reacurring problem that needs to be properly handled. These players need help and guidance, that's part of the coach's jobs. They are mentors, and they need to start acting like it.

How old is Bobby Bowden anyway? It's definitley time for that guy to retire.

  3. FSU has always had an outstanding football program. But, like most athletes they think they are above the law. From high school to college and then to the pro's they have had everything given to them. This is along line of incidents that this program has gone through.

In recent years Lavernis Coles and Peter Warick was caught at Dillard not paying for items they had purchased. Coles was released from the team where Warick charges were dropped.

Now you would think that after seeing what happened to those guys, the other players would walk the straight and narrow line.

These young men need to grow up and stop thinking that, because they play for a big name school that they can get away with the things they are doing.

The coach's need to really find out just a little bit more about the players they are recruiting. All these young men are doing is messing a great career they might have in the long run.

  4. All this is true. But what about the major punishment for Bowden? As a result of all this, he will be stripped of 14 wins in his career that he probably wont get back. I think it is sad that he has done a lot for that program, turning them into national championship contenders year in and year out up until recently. But what does he get in return for his successful coaching? Nothing. Take another example. Bill Snyder of the Kansas State University Wildcats preaches a family unity. Do you see or hear about his players committing crimes? No. You know why? Because he preaches family atmosphere.

I have nothing against Bowden. He is an excellent coach. He will make the college football hall of fame someday. If you cant tell by my bias, I am a Kansas State Wildcat fan and always will be. Hopefully Bowden will get that situation righted before he retires and hands the playbook off to Jimbo Fisher.
