Disney XD! For Guys?

Disney XD, a new branch out of Disney television, is set for the target audience of boys 6-14. However, surveys and information show that girls have been tuning in, taking most of the percentage of those who have watched the television network more.

When Disney XD first launched, it's main focus was to provide more boy-oriented television shows. These shows were filled with action-packed, boy humor and drama. But it turns out the girls are just as involved in this network.

Instead of the stereotypical "guy image," most of the shows will feature all types of heroes and characters. The sport image, skateboarder, surfer, etc: these will all be flushed around with other ideas such as the kids who focus on their school work, or have other interests.

I think seeing that the girls are watching this network can only benefit for Disney. Not only is it bringing more viewers, but it is showing that the shows may be more interesting. I think you have to consider how many shows that are more female-oriented, such as Hannah Montana, or Lizzie Mcguire have had their success due to a large part of the male audience.

The network of Disney XD is already stronger than its precedent, Toon Disney, and only positive ratings are coming so far.

  1. I think it's neat that more girls are tuning in, but how do they figure out these kinds of things?

I hated Hannah Montana and Lizzie Mcguire. It seems to me that the shows they're launching are transgender or gender neutral, which actively engages young minds of both sexes to try something different.

    Great blog.

  2. It is great that girls are watching this new show. But, is also nice to know that there is a show where boys are featured more.

You definitly have your share of girls shows. Going back to That's So Ravin,Sister Sister, and of course Hannah Montana. Hannah Montana has really taken the world by storm. Girls of all ages love her.

Hopefully, this new Disney show for boys will become a big hit also. Great post.

  3. Very true. There will always be boys who like more girl-oriented shows, and vice versa but what is Disney's point?

Are they saying that boys have nothing to watch anymore besides "girly" shows? In my young days, I watched cartoons more than sitcoms (mostly because there weren't that many)not because I didn't want to be seen as a "girly girl", but because I truly enjoyed them (ok, I still do).

My point is that Disney seems like they just can't put their finger on exactly what the different sexes want to watch. Instead, they should just focus on what kids want instead of seperating them into gender-oriented entertainment.

  4. Great point made by all of you on this. I for one hate Hannah Montana and Lizzie Mcguire. What is the point of both shows? There is no point to them.

This is just simply another fad that American boys and girls are going through. Before long another new craze will come and take their attention away from this channel.

  5. I don't think Disney will be able to recreate the success of shows like 'Even Stevens' or 'Boy Meets World', both of which attracted a much larger male audience than any of the modern Disney television shows.

However, some recently-defunct shows did show some promise, such as 'Phil of the Future'. However, if they want to add more gender-neutral or male-oriented shows, then I think they should add them to the main Disney channel line-up instead of creating a new channel that costs extra money.
