How much would you like to bid?

The former eBay chief executive, Meg Whitman, will be running for the governor of California, according to the NY Times.

She will be running for 2010 office, looking to take over as the "Governator" Arnold Schwarzenegger has ran his term limits. Whitman is a republican, and is not a fan how the economy has affected California.

“California is better than this, and I refuse to stand by and watch it,” said Whitman.

It is kind of strange to see public figures such as actors, athletes, and chairman of popular websites running for governor. I think their popularity helps their election, and not their thoughts and ideas. The media runs up their candidates with silly stuff such as nicknames and quips to their old profession and find their campaign as a way to get back into a spotlight.

I am unsure whether she has been in the media for anything negative, but hopefully she can be a great asset to California and not just another person trying to gain more popularity. To add to this, I think her qualifications should overshadow anything related to the media. She is successful, so hopefully she brings more to the table.

  1. I'm not surprised by that situation what so ever. California is the only state in the United States that prominent media figures would have a chance to win an election. Most of the state is ran by some giant "popularity" contest. So people who run ebay or act in actions movie would most likely have a better chance of winning votes rather than some "John Doe" politian. If she can offer California with a better foundation economically, politically and etc, than so be it. Good for her and I hope she wins, if she is trying to get more hits of ebay than I would have to suggest she moves on to more creative advertisment angles!

  2. Meg Whitman does definitely have the entrepreneurial experience that could help her deal with issues that business owners deal with. I hope the media can focus this gubernatorial election on the issues and qualifications and not on popularity. However, it is quite possible that Whitman is the most qualified and carries the best ideals of all the candidates. I wish her, and California, the best of luck.

  3. I'm always glad to see when a woman take charge. I don't know anything about her but I'm pretty sure that she will get a couple of votes because of her popularity. But I hope that voters actually vote for the person that can best help the state of California, and not just because she is a celebrity. A lot of people felt that Schwarzenegger won because of his popularity from movies such as Terminator, the 6th Day, etc.

  4. Meg Whitman? Never heard of her. I hope that she does a good job as the governor, but I'm not sure how well that's going to work out because California is and has been a democratic state.

I agree that it's wrong for people to use their celebrity status to gain any kind of seat in the political arena, but regardless of their status we have to admit that some of the people trained as professional politicians aren't worth much, and some aren't even the brightest bulbs in the box.

I mean, look at George Bush, our former president. Woops...was that a bit too harsh?
